The Ultimate Japanese SUV: Off-Road Legends That Continue to Capture the Hearts of Adventurers

In the automotive world, Japanese SUVs have earned a remarkable reputation for performance and durability, especially off-road. While they may not have invented four-wheel drive, there’s no denying that Japanese manufacturers have developed it to be highly capable, reliable, and efficient, leading many to consider them among the best off-road vehicles in the world.

From globally recognizable names like Land Cruiser, Armada, Montero, and Jimny, Japanese automakers have overturned the perceptions of those who looked down on their cars in the 1950s. This article will explore legendary Japanese 4WD vehicles, both past and present, that have garnered international acclaim, presented in a non-specific order.

Toyota Land Cruiser (2025 Model Year)

The Toyota Land Cruiser is undoubtedly one of the most famous off-road vehicle names. Its origins date back to 1951 as the Toyota Jeep BJ Series. Over the years, the Land Cruiser has built a strong reputation as a durable, reliable vehicle ready for any terrain. The latest Land Cruiser model, launched in the US from 2024, boasts an appealing retro design coupled with excellent off-road capability through its 4WD system. With technological options like a front anti-roll bar deactivation system, a low-range transfer case, and numerous other 4×4 functions, the new Land Cruiser can take you anywhere you want to go.

While the Land Cruiser is praised for its impressive performance, some still complain that the new model lacks a powerful V6 or V8 engine option. Some might argue that the 2.4-liter turbocharged hybrid powertrain, while fuel-efficient, lacks the “soul” of a truly powerful internal combustion engine. However, we don’t think these limitations detract from the Land Cruiser’s excellence.

Mitsubishi Montero (2006 model year)

The Mitsubishi Montero has a long and highly acclaimed history. Particularly due to its intense role in the Dakar Rally, where Mitsubishi won 12 times between 1985 and 2007, the Montero SUV remained popular in the United States until 2006. A highlight of the Mitsubishi is its unique Super Select 4WD system, offering multiple driving modes: rear-wheel drive (2H), high-gear four-wheel drive (4H with open differential), high-gear four-wheel drive with locked differential (4HLc), and low-gear four-wheel drive with locked differential (4LLc). A rear differential lock option is also available.

Although the unibody structure and independent suspension provide excellent on-road comfort, However, it may limit wheel travel when going off-road. But with Super Select and other technologies, the Montero can still take you far off-road. The 3.5-liter V6 engine produced 200 horsepower, which was later upgraded to a 3.8-liter V6 producing 215 horsepower.

Nissan Armada (2025 model year)

The Nissan Armada, known as the Patrol in many markets worldwide, is a name that needs no further explanation. It has a long history dating back to 1951. Like the early Toyota Land Cruiser, Nissan developed its own 4×4 to respond to the trend of Jeeps from the World War II era. Nissan chose a unique way to announce its success by driving a 4W60 model up Mount Fuji in Japan, becoming the first 4WD vehicle to do so. This action attracted considerable attention, and the Japanese army subsequently ordered several vehicles.

The latest Armada has pushed the limits of basic 4x4s far, yet remains as tough as steel. This new model is large, luxurious, comfortable, and comes equipped with all the latest safety systems and technologies. Now equipped with a 3.5-liter twin-turbocharged V6 engine producing 425 horsepower, offering a new level of fuel efficiency. And can it still handle off-roading? Absolutely! The Armada boasts a plethora of 4×4 tricks, like a David Copperfield magician if he enjoyed off-roading, including a low-ratio gearbox and electronically and mechanically lockable drivetrain components that make it virtually unstoppable in off-road environments.

Isuzu VehiCROSS (1999 model year)

At first glance, you might think it’s a hatchback with big wheels or a scaled-down SUV, but it’s not. This is the unique Isuzu VehiCROSS. The VehiCROSS is a special breed of 4WD, built on the Trooper’s ladder-frame 4WD platform but weighing 500 pounds less. It also features the Borg Warner Torque-On-Demand system, which automatically sends power to the wheels with traction on slippery surfaces. This system, coupled with its robust structure, High-end exterior shock absorbers and a 215-horsepower V6 engine make the VehiCROSS a 4WD vehicle capable of rally racing as well. And yes, it also has a low-ratio gearbox, allowing you to easily climb over rocks. The interior features Recaro seats and a sporty steering wheel. With a production run of less than 6,000 units, the VehiCROSS has become a highly sought-after collector’s item.

Toyota Sequoia (2025 model year)

Named after the giant Californian Sequoia tree, the Toyota Sequoia was Toyota’s flagship SUV until the Land Cruiser returned to the market. Now in its third generation, this body-on-frame SUV is powered by a twin-turbocharged V6 engine. The 3.4-liter hybrid engine replaces the previous generation’s 5.7-liter V8 engine. With 583 lb-ft of torque, the new iForce Max hybrid delivers impressive power.

The 4WD model, priced at 1794, comes with Toyota’s Part-time 4WDemand system, an electronically controlled two-speed transmission, and an automatic limited-slip differential (Auto LSD), which should be sufficient for 95% of 4WD use. However, if you’re part of the 5% demanding higher performance, the Sequoia TRD Pro ($84,500) is the answer. This model gets not only skid plates and stronger components, but also increased ground clearance, larger wheels, and a more aggressive styling. But it also features a TRD Pro off-road suspension system with 2.5-inch Fox Racing internal bypass shock absorbers and a TRD front sway bar.

Lexus LX700h Overtrail (2025 model year)

If you’re looking for a luxurious and high-performance vehicle, the Lexus LX700h Overtrail might be the right choice. If you want ultimate luxury four-wheel drive and are ready to go anywhere, there’s nothing better. As a high-end Lexus, it comes with a full range of amenities and more.

The Overtrail boasts the powerful 4WD system of the Land Cruiser 300 with a low-ratio gearbox, but also features a three-position lockout differential (front, center, and rear). It also includes a Multi-terrain system with various 4WD functions and 33-inch all-terrain tires with adjustable suspension height. The powertrain is protected by robust skid plates. It’s not just the plastic that looks good; it’s expensive, of course, but it also has amazing capabilities.

Suzuki Jimny (2025 model year)

The Suzuki Jimny is unfortunately not sold in the United States because this small Japanese 4WD doesn’t meet safety and emissions requirements. However, it’s still a very capable 4WD out of the box. Built on a ladder-frame chassis with solid axles on both sides, the Jimny isn’t the most comfortable 4×4 to drive on the road, but when you hit off-road trails or sand dunes, it shows its full potential and can overtake 4WDs that cost five times more.

With its low-gear ratio transmission, compact size, excellent approach and departure angles, and solid axle travel, the Jimny can go far off-road. For more challenging situations, the Jimny has an off-road traction control system that works reasonably well. With 100 horsepower, the Suzuki isn’t particularly fast, and with this suspension setup, it’s quite capable. The most comfortable driving experience is at around 70 mph on open roads.

Toyota 4Runner Trailhunter (2025 model year)

The Toyota 4Runner TRD Pro is one of the top-of-the-line variants in the 4Runner 4WD family, packed with features. However, if you want a mid-range 4Runner for off-road capabilities, the Trailhunter, which focuses more on overlanding than mud tackling, is attractively designed and priced similarly to the TRD Pro.

It comes with 2.5-inch Old Man Emu suspension with forged monotube shock absorbers and external dampers, an ARB roof rack, 33-inch all-terrain tires on special 18-inch bronze alloy wheels, and Rigid Industries fog lights. The part-time four-wheel drive system offers selectable 2H, 4H, and 4Low modes. It also features a rear differential lock, a front sway bar disable system, and multiple off-road driving modes. So overall, it’s a highly capable 4WD vehicle in its own right.

Isuzu Trooper (2002 model year)

The Isuzu Trooper sold in the United States until 2002 shared the same platform as another vehicle on this list, the Isuzu VehiCROSS, using the same powertrain, although with minor improvements such as the Torque-On-Demand system in the larger Trooper. The 3.5-liter V6 engine (replacing the previous 3.2-liter V6) also produces 215 horsepower, but having to carry more weight makes the Trooper less agile than the VehiCROSS.

For the rest, the solid axles, transmission, and ladder-frame structure are as robust as old boots, and the Trooper can tackle any off-road terrain. Even without modern 4WD features like multi-terrain control, traction control, or other driver assistance systems in the Trooper, relying on driver skill and the vehicle’s inherent capabilities, the Isuzu is truly legendary.

Nissan Pathfinder (1995 model year)

Yes, we know the Nissan Pathfinder is still sold in the US, but we’re highlighting an older model for a reason. The Nissan Pathfinder 3.0 V6 sold in the US during the 1990s was a truly traditional 4WD. It came with manually lockable front hubs, a hybrid transmission, and a limited-slip differential… that was all. This 153-horsepower 4WD lacked sophisticated terrain management systems, traction control, or other advanced features. Built on a pickup truck foundation, it was built for the expected durability.

The Pathfinder offered an analog 4WD experience, evoking a unique image of 90s off-road driving. Its torsion beam front suspension wasn’t popular in the “big first” aftermarket. The good news is you can find some Pathfinders from that era at reasonable prices. If nothing else, the Nissan VG30E V6 engine is renowned for its longevity. Investing a little extra for a bit more power will give you a 4WD that’s sure to bring a smile to your face every mile.
